• A Base 8 number system
• There are 8 symbols that represent quantities,
• 0-7
• Each place value in a octal number is a power of 8
• 8³, 8², 8¹, 8⁰

Conversion from binary to octal

• Starting with the LEAST SIGNIFICANT digit, mark off the digits in groups of 3
• Convert each group of three digits to its octal number
• Ex: Convert 1100111₂ to octal 

        001     100    111₂

         1         4         7

• 1100111₂=147₈
