Network adapter (or
Network Interface Card/Controller or NIC)
A network adapter is bit of
electronics, which converts the binary patterns inside the computer into
patterns (using a specified protocol like TCP/IP) that can then be sent down
the network cable.
Leased line networking
This is a private telephone line
permanently connecting two points. The main advantages are that it guarantees
connection and is permanently “on” ie there is no dialing. This is obviously
more expensive than a conventional telephone line but should also add extra
security. For large companies or those who have sites widely apart this
is a good solution.
Dial up networking
This is the normal way that home
users connect to the Internet (or other networking services). The user uses a
conventional phone line on a “temporary” basis – normally in conjunction with a
modem. It is only connected when it is needed.
Broadband networking
This uses the conventional telephone
line but can be "always on". There is no dialling - only
logging on to the ISP's servers. An ADSL modem or router is needed to
provide the connection
