Writer Open Office Part I

What is writer?
  1. Writer is the word processor component of Open Office.org.
  2. It provides all the useful features of a word processor to create different documents. 
For examples,
  • Styles & formatting
  • Including pictures,charts,tables and other objects
  • Tools to use with large document
  • Mail merge
  • Saving with different formats&export to PDF
  • etc
Starting Open Office Writer
Start>>>All Programs>>>OpenOffice 4.0.1>>>OpenOffice Writer


Writer Interface





  • Menus-Menus are located across the top of the Writer window.

Menu ItemUse
FileCommands apply to the entire document such as Open, Save, Export as PDF
Edit Commands for editing the document such as Undo, Find & Replace.
ViewCommands for controlling the display of document such as Zoom,Web Layout
InsertCommands for inserting elements into document such as headers, footers, pictures.
FormatCommands for formatting the layout of your document such as Styles & Formatting, Paragraph, Bullets & Numbering.
Table Commands to insert and edit a table in a text document.
ToolsContains functions such as Spellcheck, Customize, Options.
WindowContains commands for the display window.
HelpContains links to the Help file.

Toolbars
Toolbars-Writer has several types of toolbars They are

  • docked

  • floating

  • long-click buttons(sub menus)

  • tear-off.



  • Moving toolbars
    • To move a docked toolbar, place the mouse pointer over the toolbar handle, hold down the left mouse button, drag the toolbar to the new location, and then release the mouse button.
    • To move a floating toolbar, click on its title bar and drag it to a new location.

  • Displaying or hiding toolbars
    • To display or hide toolbars, choose View>Toolbars,
                      then click on the name of a toolbar in the list 
    • An active toolbar shows a check mark beside its name.Tear-ff toolbars are not listed in the View menu. 
Rulers



  • To show or hide rulers, choose View>Ruler
  • Openoffice documents have both horizontal & vertical
