Create new Document
You can create a new, blank Writer document in several ways:
- Select File > New > Text Document
- Click the New button on the main toolbar
- Press the Ctrl+N
Saving text Document
There are three ways to save a document in Writer
- Select File > Save As
- Click the Save button on the main toolbar
- Press Ctrl+S
OpenOffice can read and write Microsoft Word files.

Exporting to PDF
OpenOffice can export documents to PDF(Portable Document Format)
There are three ways to open an existing document in Writer:
- Select File > Open
- Click the Open button on the main toolbar
- Press Ctrl + O
Getting Help
- Writer provides several forms of help.
- Full Help file : Help > OpenOffice Help
- To activate tooltips : Help > What’s This
- Placing the mouse pointer over any of the icons displays a small box, called a tooltip. It gives a brief explanation of the icon’s function.
Closing Document
To close a document, click File > Close
- If the document has not been saved since the last change, a message box is displayed. Choose whether to save or discard your changes.
- Save: The document will be saved and then closed .
- Discard: The document will be closed ,and all modifications since the last save will be lost
- Cancel: Nothing will happen,and you will return to the document.
Closing writer
To close Writer completely, click File > Exit
