Writer Open Office Part II

Document View


  • Open Office has several ways to view a document 
  1. Print Layout


  1. Web Layout
  2. Full Screen
  3. Zoom.

You can select these choices on the View menu.
Create new Document
You can create a new, blank Writer document in several ways:

  1. Select File > New > Text Document
  2. Click the New button on the main toolbar 
  3. Press the Ctrl+N

Saving text Document
There are three ways to save a document in Writer

  1. Select File > Save As
  2. Click the Save button on the main toolbar
  3. Press Ctrl+S
OpenOffice can read and write Microsoft Word files. 
  • To save a document as a Microsoft Word file: 
               From the“Save as type”drop-down menu, select the type of Word format as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP(.doc)

Exporting  to PDF

OpenOffice can export documents to PDF(Portable Document Format)


Open Existing Document

There are three ways to open an existing document in Writer:

  1. Select File > Open
  2. Click the Open button on the main toolbar
  3. Press Ctrl + O
Getting Help


  • Writer provides several forms of help. 
  • Full Help file : Help > OpenOffice Help


  • To activate tooltips : Help > What’s This
  • Placing the mouse pointer over any of the icons displays a small box, called a tooltip. It gives a brief explanation of the icon’s function.
Closing Document

To close a document, click File > Close


  • If the document has not been saved since the last change, a message box is displayed. Choose whether to save or discard your changes.




  • Save: The document will be saved and then closed .
  • Discard: The document will be closed ,and all modifications since the last save will be lost
  • Cancel: Nothing will happen,and you will return to the document.

Closing writer

To close Writer completely, click File > Exit
